Maritime Seafoam-Striped Wool Beanie
The Scandinavy
The Southlands Live on the Sea
If you are from the Norwegian South, you are one with the sea. When the ice breaks, the boats start appearing along the coast — and for many Arendalites (where I grew up) summer is only about being on the sea, or waiting to get out there.
The theme for the Scandinavy is taken both from the classic sea-worn pattern of white and navy stripes, but also from the sea and it's cresting foam itself.
Wool & the Summer Sea
The two use cases for beanies in summer that comes to mind first, are high altitude, and open sea.
The sea is cool and windy, but there is also the sea spray and moist air. Wool is excellent for absorbing that moisture and keeping your head dry on the seas.
Use it all!
The Scandinavy is knit partly from leftovers from other knits.
It is part of my mom’s innate recycling program. She saves every thread — first to knit leftover beanies like these, then the final stubs are used as pillow stuffing.
Details
The Scandinavy is a maritime design based on the shape and material of our Southlander. The Scandinavy is a hand knit wool fisherman beanie, knit on the Norwegian South Coast. Knit with a classic rib-knitting technique and created without any tag or marking, it is very stretchy and adaptable, and you can fold it as you will.
To fight the itch, we've gone with 80% sheep wool sourced from Paraguay, and processed in one of Norways oldest yarn mills, on the West Coast. The Paraguayan climate is excellent for producing soft wool, and ensuring no itch.
Sheep wool is known for its ability to draw a lot of moisture into itself, leaving your skin dry even when sweating. It is also naturally anti-bacterial, and can go a long time only being aired out, not washed.
About Wool
Hailed by Norwegians for centuries, sheep wool is the number one choice among knitters. Along with choosing wool because of its historical significance in Norwegian knitting history, there are timeless features associated with wool.
- Wool is great at insulating in moist conditions.
- Wool has a rough and natural look, aside from the fact that it is natural.
- Wool is naturally flame resistant, adding an extra layer of security around the campfire.
The raw sheep wool we use is mostly sourced from Paraguay, selected because of the softer wool that the tropical climate produces. The yarn is processed into yarn on the Norwegian West Coast, in one of Norway's oldest yarn mills.
