Hand sketched and inked artwork
On the wild waves outside the Norwegian West Coast, the Navigator locks his eye on the vague fog-wreathed shape of distant land. He grabs the helm and holds her steady, thinking about his family waiting for him at home.
We love all things handmade, and of course we needed to track down an artist that could draw with pencil, pen and paper, the old fashioned way.
The design went through a few digital sketches, before the original was sketched out on paper, then inked on paper. The coloring has been done digitally after scanning the original.
Present it right
The print size is A3 — large enough to appreciate the fine ink lines.
You can opt for an A3 frame, or chat with your frame-shop to find the right passepartout, to fit it in a larger or different shaped frame.
Buy it with a Westcoaster beanie
The Navigator is born out of our imagining of the Westcoaster beanie in its right element. A little old fashioned, and out in the elements.
The real Westcoaster — is for sale in our store. 100% sheep wool, double knit for the wild weather of the Norwegian West Coast.
Buy them as a pair, save 30% off the artwork.
About the artist
K is an Indonesian artist who masters everything from hand sketching and inking to excellent digital coloring (a generally underrated skill.)
We discovered him after being drawn to his specialty — inked portraits (of humans and animals), sometimes plain ink, other times beautifully colored.
We have a longer form video of when we kicked off this project and met with K for the first time.
About the Navigator of the North Sea
The Navigator of the North Sea is an artwork depicting a Norwegian sailor in the age of the sailshops, living on the Norwegian West Coast.
He's wearing our Westcoaster beanie in the artwork, to protect him agains the shivers from the cold seaspray.
It is sketched and inked traditionally with pencil and pen, and then scanned and digitally colored. The copies are printed on high quality 250g water color style paper.
The size of the artwork is A3, so look for an A3 frame or ask your frame shop for options using passepartout to pad it out and enable you to use other frame sizes.
We also dabble in other areas of handcraft, usually in collaboration with artists, such as our handcrafted caps and hand inked artwork.
