“To everyone else it looks like a nicely designed hat, but to me it’s even more special because I know I’m wearing a one-off piece that was made with care.”

Beanies being hand knit

400 Year Old Tradition

Crafted by Hand. worn for Life.

Every Southlander is hand-knit the way it’s been done for centuries in Norway — knitting needles, a thread of yarn, and a whole lot of patience. It’s slow. It’s meticulous. And it’s the reason why these beanies feel like nothing else you’ve ever owned.

With every stitch you get:

  • A fit that moulds to your head, like it was made just for you.
  • A fold-it-yourself beanie that you switch between covering or being above your ears.
  • A little bit of the Norwegian Soul in every thread.
  • Over 1600 Southlanders sold

(Over half of our total beanie sales are Southlanders!)
About 5500 knitting hours worth of beanie

  • Sold to over 45 countries

    And every American state

Sheep wool

Natural wool material

Nature's Most Breathable Material

For every season — this thin wool beanie brings out the best of its wool. Naturally insulating, moisture-wicking, and soft enough to wear all day.

Our wool does more than keep you warm:

  • It pulls moisture away from your skin, so no matter the weather, you stay comfortable.
  • It’s gentle on your scalp (say goodbye to itchy beanies).
  • We get all our high quality wool from a Norwegian yarn mill that believes well-cared-for sheep produce the finest wool. They source the raw wool for this yarn in Uruguay, where the climate produces a particularly soft wool grain.

Fresh off the needles

Just like Mom Knit it

We wanted the experience to be classic and simple, straight off the knitting needles — just like when my mom knit for me as a child.

This led to a few core elements, present in all our beanies. They’re all knit in one piece, with a uniform pattern, and no tags. This allows you to decide where to fold it, and how many times to fold. Above the ears, or below — or both on the same hike when the weather changes. Or roll it, if that is what you like. It’s your choice

Knitting Since 1932

A Family Tradition

It all started with my grandma, learning to knit at just five years old. Through wartime and winters, knitting became a way of life. Connecting our family and keeping us warm.

The tradition was passed down to my mom, and knitting became a central part of my childhood. In 2015, I rediscovered this family craft and knew it was time to share it with the world.

That’s how Red Hat Factory was born. A brand rooted in heritage, care, and hand-knit quality.

Keeping the Craft Genuine

Made By HanD. Made for You.

We believe in slow, meaningful work. That’s why every Southlander beanie is knit by hand by skilled artisans. Many of our knitters already spend their spare time knitting, we simply give them the tools to continue their craft.

This means they can knit just as they always have, while you receive a truly authentic Norwegian beanie experience.

We stick to this:

  • 100% hand-knit: No shortcuts, no machines. Just care in every stitch.
  • Sustainably made: Crafted from responsibly sourced natural wool.
  • No tags, no rules: Knit in one seamless piece, with no tags so you can fold and style it your way.
  • Signed by the knitter: Each beanie comes with a certificate of authenticity, signed with the knitters’ initials
